Active Fibers

The thesis aims to combine Fibre-Polymer Composites(FPCs) and thin timber towards a hybrid fibrous material system. Using thin timber elements as an integrated winding frame, this project leverages the elastic deformation potential of bent active timber towards an integrated material, simulation, and fabrication workflow. The result is the mutual activation of both materials through a bending, tensioning, and stiffening relationship. This project offers new solutions for material efficienct and performative architectural elements through hybridization, as well as novel ways of approaching fiber winding.
